Abstract

How to make visible the spaces in-between the buildings? How to transgress the status quo and then plan, build and use the city taking advantage of its 3D urban void? From these questions it is in development a PhD research focused on the space in-between the buildings in the city of Sao Paulo, with the aim of proposing an alternative future to the city, specifically through guidelines, strategies and tools for urban planning and design, based on environmental, urban and social criteria. To consolidate and strengthen the PhD research's theoretical background and method, it is proposed a Research Internship Abroad at the ETH Zurich, Department of Architecture, directly supervisioned by Prof. Dr. Marc Angélil, joining two research groups deeply related to the PhD research in development in Brazil. The ETH is the seventh best architecture school in the world, and it is recognized by its leading research and design activities, articulating innovative research approaches and methods to deal with imperative urban issues, with a close understanding of the Brazilian context. The Research Internship Abroad at the ETH Zurich DARCH is definitely an outstanding opportunity to the development of the PhD research, impacting its final results and consequently its contribution to Academia and to the city in general.
