Abstract

Literary Taste is approached as an eminently sociological problem by different intellectual traditions. Among the authors that discuss this problem is Raymond Williams. , who sees this question associated with the notions of social character and pattern of culture. This work aims to explore, from its beginning in the romantic tradition until William's contemporaneity, the historical process of formation of the literary taste concept. This work must show and explain the developments that connect these two moments, culminating in the concept of literary taste used by Williams. This work has its bases on William's books - Culture and Society (1958) and The Long Revolution (1961) - and intends to demonstrate the signification and the function that this concept assumes in his work.
