Abstract

Visceral leishmaniasis (VL), a neglected disease, has three elements of important interaction in their epidemic process, for which the control measures are focused: the reservoir, through the identification and euthanasia of positive dogs; the vector, by chemical control; and the host, by the identification and treatment of human cases. There are doubts in Brazil, about the effectiveness of this control. The occurrence of the disease both in country and in the state of São Paulo (ESP), and in the city of Birigui-SP, has presented a dispersal process, with the increase of incidence. Birigui presented as higher rates in recent years in relation to its administrative region. Objectives: To describe and evaluate the epidemiological process of VL, its occurrence in space and time and the effectiveness of control measures in the city of Birigui-SP, during the period from 2006 to 2015. Methods: The study will occur in the urban area of Birigui. The coverage of canine and vector control activities will be estimated and evaluated, the human incidence rates standardized by age and sex will be estimated and the association of these with the coverage of the control activities will be evaluated. The results of these analyzes obtained for Birigui will be compared with those of Araçatuba, obtained in a previous study. Risk areas of occurrence of VL will be detected through the use of scanning statistics and the existence of spatial dependence between the distribution of canine and human cases will be verified, using the bivariate Ripley K function.
