Abstract

This postdoc proposal aims to analyze, model and simulate the early stages of the lignocellulosic biomass conversion into cellulosic ethanol and coproducts, with consideration of realistic biomass morphologies observed in 3D images acquired by X-ray microtomography. This research is a contribution to the thematic project "Storage, modeling and analysis of dynamical systems for e-science applications" (FAPESP grant 2015/01587-0), whose general purpose is to develop computational models and methodologies to support e-Science applications viewed as dynamic systems. The work of this postdoc proposal will be jointly developed at the Brazilian Bioethanol Science and Technology Laboratory (CTBE/CNPEM) and the Institute of Mathematics and Statistics, University of Sao Paulo (IME/USP). The research will synergistically integrate: 1) the CTBE/CNPEM biomass tomography data and expertise in biomass processing; 2) the IME/USP expertise in e-Science tools especially image analysis; and 3) the postdoc candidate expertise in modelling of chemical processes and their dynamics. By such integration of data, e-Science tools, and complementary expertise, this proposal will bring innovative results for biomass conversion technology and for e-Science. (AU)
