Abstract

Lipemia is among the main causes of sample rejection in veterinary clinical laboratories, which may interfere with some biochemical determinations obtained by spectrophotometry. However, the postprandial lipid profile of dogs fed with commercial premium food is not known, especially the peak of postprandial lipemia, time in which the greatest laboratory errors are likely to occur. In this sense, the present study is the first step in a series of studies that will evaluate the effect of postprandial lipemia on canine biochemical profile and oxidative stress markers; the present work aims to determine the peak of postprandial lipemia, to determine the postprandial lipid and glycemic profile of dogs fed with premium commercial food, as well as to determine the time that these parameters take to return to the baseline preprandial values. To this end, 15 healthy dogs weighing more than 20 kg with different racial patterns and sexes will be selected for inducting the postprandial lipemia using premium commercial feed in the amount indicated by the manufacturer. Blood samples collected for serum and blood glucose will be collected immediately before feeding (after 12 hours of fasting) and every hour up to 11 hours after feeding. The biochemical analyzes will be performed in semi-automated spectrophotometer using a set of commercial reagents following the recommendations of the manufacturers. The VLDL and LDL values will be calculated using the Friedewald equation. The variables will be tested for normality and repeated measures ANOVA or Friedman tests will be used to verify the differences between the moments. (AU)
