Abstract

The PEN Club of Brazil, founded in September 1936 by the doctor and writer Claudio Justiniano de Souza, based in Rio de Janeiro, has been established, in the national scene of the 1930s to the 1950s, as the only association of Brazilian writers to be articulated internationally. Linked to PEN International, which was founded in London in 1921, the Brazilian center stood out, especially in the early years of its existence, by its participation in the International Congresses sponsored by the London entity. In the club's Boletim (newsletter) and in the national media, the actions of the Brazilian delegates in these congresses were sparsely presented through informative notes or news related to their progress in the country, but they are not sufficient to measure and clarify the role that the Brazilian center has actually achieved in the international context. Thus, in the face of the absence of critical resources about the association in the national historiography and the scarcity of material preserved by the entity on these subjects, it is necessary to consult the annals of these events and other documents that clarify the center's performance in the scope of the entity.
