Abstract

Biosand filter - BSF has been used worldwide for the household treatment of drinking water in poor communities due to its low cost, efficiency and simplicity in operation and maintenance activities. Although its efficiency in removing physical, chemical and microbiological parameters has been investigated, studies have not considered the characterization of the flow (continuous and intermittent flows), the relationship with the formation of the biological layer (schmutzdecke), efficiency in the removal of emerging contaminants, as Bisphenol-A and possibility of fast ripening through the introduction of nutrients. This research project, to be held between April 2018 and March 2019, aims at i) characterizing the flow in biosand filters operated in continuous and intermittent flows, ii) studying the ripening period and formation of the biological layer (schmutzdecke) according to the method of operation, iii) studying the possibility of fast ripening through the introduction of nutrients, and iv) evaluating the biosand filter performance in Bisphenol-A removal, according to the method of operation.Two BSFs of the Department of Civil, Environmental & Geomatic Engineering at University College London will be used. Dr. Luiza Cintra Campos, a world expert in slow-sand filtration, will be the research supervisor. She has developed a remarkable methodology for quantifying biomass in slow-sand filters. The adaptation and transfer of the methodology will be essential for the evaluation of the efficiency of biosand filters in Latin America; therefore, the research at University College London becomes essential. In 2016, UCL ranked seventh among the best universities in the world, according to QS World University Rankings.The research grant will enable the candidate to acquire and develop new knowledge, hold international research relations, and consolidate the results of the FAPESP research grant entitled "Biosand filters operated in continuous and intermittent flows: challenges in the construction, operation and maintenance - Process: 2014/12712-8", under her coordination.If the research grant is approved, the candidate will use the results of the internship (temperate region) together with those obtained in Brazil (a tropical climate region) to prepare her unpublished thesis as part of the requirements for the obtaining of the title of Associate Professor at the University of São Paulo. She will also produce several scientific articles to be published in indexed international journals. The research grant will enable the development and expansion of knowledge related to BSFs and support their transference to isolated communities in the country and worldwide. (AU)
