Abstract Facing the difficulty in collecting biological samples from rare animals and elusive animals, the collection and analysis of hair has been shown as a good alternative for identification and differentiation between animal species. The present study aims to describe morphologically Brazilian deer guard-hairs and sub-hairs, seeking a possible differentiation between species by this method. For this purpose, we will collect hairs of five body regions (head, neck, lateral of the thorax, middle back and gluteal) of a couple of each Brazilian deer species. We will use animals kept in captivity in the Deer Research and Conservation Center (NUPECCE, Unesp Jaboticabal), a scientific breeding facility. We will select three hairs of each body region to carry out the analyzes. Therefore, we will perform procedures that will culminate in the obtainment of images containing the cuticular and medullar patterns of the hair samples. These images will be photographed or illustrated, for later morphological description. As imagens obtidas serão fotografadas ou ilustradas, para posterior descrição morfológica. Besides that, we will collect quantitative data related to the cuticular and medullar patterns, such as data of total hair thickness and medullar thickness, area and perimeter of the scales. Will be performed a search for unique morphological characteristics that would discriminate the regions of the body and the different species. A "Discriminant Analysis" of the quantitative data will also be carried out in order to possibly create a method for species identification. Therefore, we expect to provide detailed morphological descriptions of Brazilian deers' guard-hairs and sub-hairs, generating species identification keys and "Discriminant Analysis" equations for classification of hairs found in the field.
