Abstract

Chronic periodontitis affects more severity and frequency immunosuppressed patients, including HIV-infected patients. The immunosuppression caused by HIV infection may, in part, explain the lower efficiency of periodontal therapy in these patients, however, the expression of certain inflammatory mediators can also be associated with increased severity of chronic periodontal disease in these patients. The aim of this study is to assess whether periodontal treatment can alter the concentrations of salivary cytokines (Lf, IL-1beta, TNF-alpha, IL-6) in patients infected and HIV-uninfected, correlating these possible changes with improvement clinical periodontal disease by means of an almost experimental study. Participate in this study 20 patients infected with HIV and 20 HIV-non infected participants, all with chronic periodontitis, which will be submitted to periodontal therapy. The levels of biomarkers in saliva and gingival crevicular fluid will be evaluated before and after periodontal treatment by ELISA. In order to minimize the influence of immune compromised patients infected with HIV, only participants will be selected with LTCD-4 count <200cel / mm 3, viral load undetectable and regular use of antiretroviral therapy. This study was approved by the Institutional Review Board of the FORP/USP (CAAE: 50004415.1.0000.5419), and all patients must give informed consent.
