Abstract

Obesity, characterized by accumulation of body fat, affects a third of the world population. Among the many complications of obesity are sleep disorders including obstructive sleep apnea (OSA ) and snoring. The latter, caused mostly by central fat accumulation, may be a sign and also lead to worsening of the OSA clinical state. Among the treatment options for snoring and OSA are speech language therapies to increase muscle strength and control of the structures involved in the upper airway, reducing the severity of snoring and OSA and improving the quality of sleep. Although a population with high susceptibility, few studies have investigated these characteristics in obese. Research on the presence of sleep disorders, orofacial myofunctional irregularities and snoring in obese individuals will contribute to warn of the need and to the multidisciplinary treatment planning involving speech therapy. Thus, it is proposed in this paper to investigate the quality of sleep, orofacial myofunctional characteristics and the presence of snoring in a population of obese individuals. The survey will include 50 individuals selected randomly in an obesity clinic, aged between 25 and 65 years, of both genders. The investigation of the quality of sleep will be held through the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI -BR), orofacial myofunctional characteristics through myofunctional examination (MBGR) and the presence of snoring with the Berlin Questionnaire for Snoring.
