Abstract

The present research is centered in the decades of 1880-1890. It is intended to investigate the Carioca literary scene in the moment of transition between the Monarchy and the Republic, problematizing the fact that until now most analyzes in the fields of sociology, cultural history or social history only explore the literary and political work of " Of letters ", especially during this period. A research that connects men and women of letters, focusing mainly on Machado de Assis, Arthur Azevedo, Ignez Sabino, Maria Benedicta Câmara Bormann [Délia] and Josephina Álvares de Azevedo, who are active in the women's press and in the Of great circulation in the Imperial Court of the 1880s and in the Federal Capital of the 1890s. The press, therefore, is understood here as the field in which a network of contacts has been established between these men and women. The literature produced in the space of the Rio de Janeiro newspapers promotes the possibility of investigating the meanings of political and literary projects of historical agents, both men and women, who intend to rethink in a critical and propositive way the role of literature in a society that has just started slavery And the Monarchy, integrating the thematic project "Between slavery and the burden of freedom: the workers and the ways of exploiting labor in historical perspective" (FAPESP, 2014-2018), developed by Cecult-UNICAMP.
