Abstract

This research aims to study the basic and acidic volcanic rocks of the Serra Geral Formation (Paraná Basin) outcropping in Gramado Xavier region, RS, through magnetic methods, aiming the knowledge of the magnetic anisotropy and magnetic minerals carrying the remanent magnetization of the rocks. For this purpose, it is intended to determine the magnetic properties of these rocks through a detailed study of rock magnetism and to determine the direction of the characteristic magnetization of the rocks. This study will allow: identify the different lava flows (where field conditions does not allow it); investigate the temporal relationship of successive lava flows by characteristic remanent magnetization direction of rocks and, if possible, establish the magnetoestratigraphy; infer the direction of magmatic flow of lava flows through the magnetic anisotropies, thereby contributing to a better understanding of the basic and acid volcanism duration occurred in the study area. The results will be compared with other existing magnetic data for the southern region of the Paraná Basin, in an attempt to correlate temporally lava flows studied here with lava flows from different locations, such as those studied by Ernesto et al. (1990), among others. (AU)
