Abstract

This research project aims to discuss the influence of the Roman Catholic Church inside the Brazilian National Institute of Historical and Artistic heritage - IPHAN - between the years of 1937 and 2002, in the State of São Paulo. The temporal cut is justified by the year of creation of IPHAN, and by the year in which a Catholic good in the State of São Paulo was listed. In order to understand the dynamics of preservation of IPHAN, as well the potential conflicts and negotiations that involved Roman Catholic Church, we will use both processes that had the final decision to be listed, as well as those that did not receive a favorable seal of this preservation agency. The research, also, seeks to understand how the IPHAN dealt with the "dual role" of Roman Catholic Church, since the institution has a seat on the Advisory Board of the agency, and was, also an interested party in the cases selected for study.
