Abstract

In the Brazilian petrochemical industry, studs are used to join together flanges or equipment connectors in marine environments, where fluctuations of the tensile stress at the studs occur due to the variation of the pressure in the oil well or due to the ocean waves movement. In order to protect the studs that are subjected to corrosive environments, coatings are used as protection, therefore, frequently the studs undergo an electrodeposition process of cadmium. However, it is widely known that this coating offers a great impact on the environment and a health risk. The feasibility of the electrodeposition of zinc-nickel coating as a substitution to the cadmium for AISI 4140 steel will be studied at this work. The fatigue behavior comparison will be made of the S-N curves of AISI 4140 steel in axial fatigue at room temperature. The Weibull distribution will be applied to perform the statistical analysis of the fatigue behavior. The optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy will be used to perform the analysis of the microstructure and fracture surface, respectively.
