Abstract
The present research aims to map the urban transformation of Rio Branco Avenue, located in the central area of the city of Rio de Janeiro (Brazil), between 1960 and 1989, in order to understand the processes of urban transformation and to problematize the renewal of its urban space. This research is part of the broader project "Central area of Rio de Janeiro: memory, cultural patrimony and social participation, 1960-1992", aided by FAPESP, in the category Aid for Research, process number 2014/05513-9, under the responsibility of Professor PhD Flávia Brito do Nascimento. The proposed mapping consists in surveying information on buildings and urban actions in relation to their dates (construction and demolition), their architects, urban policies, transformations and social and legal agents. This data has been applied at the free georeferencing software GQIS, which uses the GIS language (Geographic Information System) for mapping and optimizing the compilation and understanding of information. For the elaboration of these maps, several bibliographic references were used, among them photographic images, cartography, urban plans, textual documents, articles and periodicals. This research project is composed of the Rio Branco Avenue brief history, pointing out the results obtained by the research until now, the objectives of the internship abroad, as well as the activity plan and methodology.
