Abstract

The proposal of the main study is to interrogate the epigenetic role in melanoma initiation and progression. The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) is an intergovernmental agency that is part of the World Health Organization (WHO). Dr Zdenko Herceg is the principal investigator of the Epigenetics Group at IARC. His group has a great expertise in the epigenetic analysis of tumors, including high throughput techniques and bioinformatics analysis. In this context, a collaboration between Barretos Cancer Hospital and IARC was established, in order to perform at IARC, the first part of the project consisting in the methylation profiling of 100 melanoma cases previously analyzed for genomic alteration by whole-genome-sequencing and included in the International Cancer Genome Consortium (ICGC), followed by bioinformatics analysis and clinical-pathological associations.
