Abstract

The end of the nineteenth century was characterized by the regional making of historical knowledge in Brazil. It wasn't the time for national histories anymore, but the right moment to the realization of local studies. In this modern conception of history, attention is drawn to an aspect: the importance given to the pursuit and the release of documents. Starting from this scenario, the objective of this work is to map the route of a set of documents published in the Journal of the Historical and Geographical Institute of São Paulo between the years of 1895 and 1905. In spite of the voluminous number of publications - will be here analyzed from the volume I to X -, is to find out the way in which the production of this documents worked in the historiographical conception of São Paulo in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, through the construction of patterns, common places and ideas turned truth. An intellectual of this period, Antonio de Toledo Piza and Almeida, will be used here as an intermediary for this analysis. In the end, the proposed work still aims at analyzing three dimensions of the production of historical knowledge in the state of São Paulo - the eagerness for documentary evidences, the intellectuals and historian's practices, and the writing of history under the imperative of the document - to make explicit the singularity of a historical formation guided by the selection, transcription and publication of historical documents.
