Abstract

This project proposes to discuss the issue of brazilian independent cinema in the period between the First São Paulo Congress of Cinema (1952) and the creation of Ancine (2001), mapping the debate and ideas developed by the brazilian filmmakers, movie critics, and by the State in order to identify the transformations of independent film thinking throught the history of brazilian cinema.Although it refers mainly to a mode of cinematographic production alternative to the model of hegemonic cinema, the term independent cinema often refers to aesthetic and production, commercialization and exhibition proposals that are diverse along the development of the activity in Brazil, presenting diverse ways of relation with the State and with its own antithesis, the industrial cinema. When analyzing the independent national cinema as a strategy of affirmation in opposition to the mainstream and the domination of the cinematographic market by the productions of industrial character, it is note the necessity of observation on this category through these articulations, assuming its complexity and affirming its importance in history of Brazilian cinema. So, is it possible to affirm the existence of a brazilian independent cinema? Considering the relations mentioned above, what would be the limit of the "independence" of this cinema? The main objective of this research is to map the transformations of thought and concept of independent cinema through the history of brazilian cinema. (AU)
