Abstract

With this project we propose to research the town of São Luís do Paraitinga from the restoration of the Captaincy of São Paulo from 1765 to 1850, focussing on census, tributary, cartorial and cartographic documentation, and a theoretical framework based on History of Urbanization and its links with Geography, Material Culture and Micro-History. The goal is to study the village in its regional and macroterritorial interfaces, understanding its role in a wider urban network and to profile the social agents that gave it meaning. Likewise, we wish to understand what roles São Luís do Paraitinga performed, showing its political economic and social ties in the logic of the urban network that was established in the territory now called the São Paulo Paraíba Valley. In parallel, it is intended to follow how these same agents were inserted in the administrative instances of the Portuguese empire and dialogued in front of the general guidelines imposed by the governors and other representatives of the central power. With this data in hands we intend to answer some questions, such as: for what reasons was formed and which roles played the urban network of the present São Paulo Paraíba Valley during the last decades of the colonial period and the beginning of the empire; to what extent were the relations between the local power of São Luís do Paraitinga and the urbanization policies carried out in the Captaincy of São Paulo after its restoration in 1765, and finally, which logics, dimensions, and forms of occupation organized the inner urban space of São Luís. Our hypothesis is that the forms of organization of space shaped social relations and practices at different scales - from the intra-urban to the territory - and, through the study of the materiality of the cores and the territory, by enriching them with the profile of the actors involved, it is possible to unveil the role of a nucleus in the logics of Brazil's urbanization process in the colonial period at various scales.
