Abstract

In commercial farms, boars are often exposed to stressful situations, such as individual housing, inadequate ambient temperature, food restriction, lack of social interaction, diseases, among others. Consequences of such challenges for the welfare of the animals and also the possibilities to influence the semen quality are unknown. Epigenetic changes in semen are responsible for modulating the metabolism and behaviour of the offspring, including the resilience of the animals and, consequently, their welfare. Acetylation of histones, DNA methylation and the population of micro RNAs in the semen are the study targets in this project because they are the possible pathways for the heredity and behavioural and physiological changes in the offspring. The females are also extremely important in modulating offspring. The prenatal and neonatal periods can influence the behaviour, physiology, and offspring resilience. The male is an unique model because it does not have interactions with the offspring, so any changes transmitted to its offspring occur through its germ cells. The pig is an useful model for comparative studies, because its physiology is very similar to humans. Our aim is to measure the impact of restriction of movement and behavioural frustration (housing in gestation crates) and also a simulation of a challenge (exposure with LPS) on boar welfare and possible changes in seminal quality and epigenome.
