Abstract

This research project analyzes the US-Brazilian relations during Brazil's military dictatorship (1964-1985) taking the social basis of Brazil's foreign policy as parameter. It seeks to understand not only how US-Brazilian bilateral relations evolved in the period, but also how Brazil's social actors, particularly entrepreneurs of the agrarian, banking, commercial, and industrial sectors, influenced and were influenced by theses relations, mainly when it comes to bilateral economic relations. This research project also seeks to comprehend how Brazil's activism in South America, specially by means of destabilizing left-wing democratic governments and supporting the ascension of authoritarian regimes, were influenced by Brazilian relations with Washington and by local entrepreneurs. Given that there are still few studies on this subject, and as the US-Brazilian relations had an enormous impact for the Brazilian contemporary history, this project may bring an important contribution in putting US-Brazilian relations and the foreign policy of Brazil's military regime in deeper historical perspective.
