Abstract

Iron is critical for oxidative metabolism, which is a mandatory component of the major proteins responsible for the transport, transfer and utilization of oxygen in skeletal muscle. Its deficiency (DFe) can attenuate aerobic performance by decreasing oxygen transport, transfer and utilization in skeletal muscle and result in decreased maximal oxygen consumption and decreased ability to withstand submaximal exertion. Iron supplementation, due to its ergogenic properties, can influence the formation of hemoglobin and the transport of oxygen in the blood and muscles, and the production of energy via oxidative phosphorylation. DFe is frequent in athletes due to the high demand of iron required by physical exercises. In the case of iron deficiency anemia, athletic performance will be impaired and supplementation in these cases may bring benefits such as a reduction in serum lactate concentration. However, it is not well understood in the literature if these particularities of the relationship of iron standard in the organism with performance can be influenced by epigenetics. Thus, the objective of the present study will be to evaluate the performance during a lactate test of the offspring of rats who underwent different iron diets during pregnancy.
