Abstract

The aims of the project are to evaluate the nitrogen efficiency usage in beef cattle production system due different nitrogen fertilizer rates, to estimate nitrogen mineralization from litter, nitrous oxide (N2O), methane (CH4) and carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions and ammonia (NH3) volatilization. The experiment will be carried out during four years in palisade grass pastures (Brachiaria brizantha cv. Marandu). The treatments are 3 doses of nitrogen fertilizer (90, 180 and 270 kg N ha-1 year-1) and the control (without N fertilization). The source of N will be urea and the fertilizer application during the rainy season (growing season). The experimental design is completely randomized. The fertilization will be split 4 times during the rearing phase of beef cattle. In the rainy season the cattle will be supplemented exclusively by mineral mixture ad libitum. During the period of season transition rainy-dry season, the stocking rate will be decreased, only 24 animals will remain on the pasture and, will be supplemented with 0.7% of live weight. Therefore, it possible to assess the residuals effects of the fertilization on the remaining forage yield on the dry season. Finally, a greenhouse gas balance will be proceed using life cycle analysis. (AU)
