Abstract

This project aims to present (re)translations of two important texts written by Stéphane Mallarmé, La Musique et les Lettres (1894) and "The Impressionists and Édouard Manet" (1876), both still unprecedented in Portuguese language: that one, a critical-poem of great technical complexity, from which was borrowed a paragraph of "Crise de vers", another central work signed by the poet; this one, a text originally translated into English, the only document we have access to, since the original text in French is missing. Even if considerably different in style, subject and date of publication, they are two spearheads of the mallarmean aesthetic, barely studied in Brazil. Their meeting point consists in the fact that both of them connect poetry to another art, music or painting, also in the fact that both promote a reflection about what is there of musical and plastic in writing - and, ultimately, on the letters. Accordingly, an analytic study concerning the texts in evidence is, a priori, necessary - also for a deeper understanding of the aesthetical project intended by the author. Furthermore, these productions are translational specimens of interest and provoke fertile thoughts about retranslation because, though never translated into Portuguese, they present us problems that belong to this specific area of the Translation Studies, such as the successive (re)translation of a single paragraph, in the first text, or the question regarding the so-called "indirect translation", in the second. Therefore, it is relevant to discuss, a posteriori, the challenges found, the problems faced, and the parties taken in the process of (re)translating them, reason why this project proposes, finally, to elaborate critical commentaries concerning the (re)translational pathway and its results.
