Abstract

Bilateral cochlear implant came to be considered in patient in rehabilitation with bilateral hearing loss severe or profound degree due the main complaint of unilateral cochlear implant users, that is the speech auditory perception difficulty, a function related to binaural hearing. However, still remain important questions about this, because even if performed simultaneously, it is necessary to understand how the auditory system responds to bilateral electrical stimulation after a period of sensory deprivation. There is few scientific evidence on this subject in international literature, and specifically in national research it was not found studies related to this issue. The goal of this study is to characterize the potential components of cortical auditory evoked and the development of auditory skills of children using bilateral cochlear implant simultaneously in the first two years of use of the devices. Participate in this study 15 children with bilateral sensorineural hearing loss who underwent bilateral cochlear implant surgery simultaneously. The research on potential cortical auditory evoked will be held with the speech stimulus/of/, presented in free field, and participants who achieve a score of at least 50% in the test 6 GASP will be applied auditory perception test of speech in noise PINT Brazil. It will also be applied to parents or guardians, the evaluation questionnaire of auditory development - LittlEars, meaningful auditory integration scale for small children IT - MAIS, and the questionnaire for evaluation of oral language (adapted from Meaningful use of speech scales - MUSS). This study will be conducted in two different moments of evaluation within the first two years of use of the electronic devices, according to the follow-up routine. The records will be analyzed by the researcher during the research potential of cortical auditory evoked and subsequently by a judge active in the field of electrophysiology of the hearing. Kappa tests and interclass correlation coefficient will be used to verify the agreement between the analysis of the evaluators. The Kolmogorov-Smirnov test for normality will be used to check the distribution of the differences in order to determine whether parametric or non-parametric tests will be used. It will be performed a comparison between the values of latency and amplitude of the cortical auditory components P1-N1-P2 complex, besides the correlation with auditory perception of speech and development of auditory skills. It is expected that this study build knowledge about the auditory system with sensory deprivation and bilateral electrical stimulation, with an impact on auditory perception of speech, giving us understanding if there is an age or period that is more sensible to indicate the bilateral implant simultaneous in which the user would present similar development noticed in children with normal hearing.
