Abstract

Due to its immense adsorption capacity of gases and liquids, activated carbons have been used in the treatment of water, effluent and waste gases, as well as in several stages of the processes in chemical and associated industrial plants. Activated charcoals are carbonaceous materials with a well developed internal microporous structure and the presence of a broad spectrum of surface functional groups, which can act as adsorbent supports or as molecular sieve systems. Different organic materials have been used for the production of activated carbon, although not all are economically viable. The possibility of conversion of yeast biomass from the alcohol production process, which has been basically used for the production of animal feeds and a supplement of protein feed in foods, in activated carbon may lead to a new destination for this material, adding Commercial value. The proposed work aims to improve the process of production of activated carbon from the yeast biomass of the sugar and alcohol industry, with the elimination of previously developed methodology steps under the guidance of Profa. Georgia Labuto (Unifesp) and Wagner Alves Carvalho (UFABC). Which is the subject of a registered patent. After the improvement of the production process, with elimination of steps, the obtained carbons will be characterized and evaluated to determine their potential uses. (AU)
