Urban historiography in the IV Centenary of Rio de Janeiro: the representations of the city

Abstract

The present research intends to analyze the historiographic representations referring to the city of Rio de Janeiro in the year of commemoration of its IV Centenary, in 1965. The IV Centenary was the greater and more comprehensive celebration of the history of the city of Rio de Janeiro, having the year of 1965 marked by a series of celebrations. Vast historiographic production took place as a reflection of the period and its historical context; countless newspapers and history books counted, magnified, and celebrated not only the 400 years that the city completed that year but recalled its four-century trajectory. Thus, the purpose of this research project of Scientific Initiation is to review the contemporary historiographic production to the IV Centenary of the city and to what questions they were being made and how they reverberated in the city that was transformed. What was the tone of carioca historiography about the city in the celebrations of its 400 years? In a political period troubled not only by the first year of the Brazilian military regime, but also by the recent loss of the title, in 1960, from the federal capital to Brasilia, it seeks to understand what the society of the time wanted to say and represent Through the books of History of the city and the periodical press, and, at the same time, what these documents tell of the society that produced them.
