Abstract

In the framework of the future luminosity upgrade of the LHC (HL-LHC) the experiments are preparing for the new experimental conditions, expected to be very challenging, with a series of important upgrades. The CMS experiment plans to upgrade a number of its detectors - including its large silicon tracker system and the endcap calorimeters - and to add a new high-precision timing detector. It is planned that both on-detector and off-detector systems will receive significant upgrades. The transport of data, trigger, timing and control information in these systems is accomplished via optical communications, and the performance and reliability of the optical connections, their communication protocols and the processing algorithms which they are interfacing is critical for the successful acquisition and elaboration of data by the experiment.
