Abstract

Triatoma sordida is currently considered the most frequently captured species in Brazil, being recorded, to date, in 13 Brazilian states. Although its distribution is predominantly peridomiciliary, T. sordida is also able to form numerous intradomiciliary colonies, highlighting it among one of the priorities in triatomine control campaigns in Brazil. Since the cryptic speciation phenomenon has already been recorded for populations of T. sordida of Bolivia and, considering that cryptic species can be differentiated only by genetic tools, we emphasize the need for a genetic study of populations among the specimens of the several Brazilian States, since little is known about the genetics of populations of this Brazilian vector (being most studies related to Minas Gerais). Thus, the present study has the purpose of characterizing molecularly, through the ITS-1 intergenic region and through mitochondrial molecular markers Cyt B and ND1, population variants of T. sordida (Catuti - MG, Corumbá - MS, Macaúbas - BA, Monte Azul - MG, Seabra - BA and Taubaçu - BA), in order to analyze the genetic structure and to evaluate the specific status of the Brazilian populations of this vector, with emphasis on the phenomenon of cryptic speciation.
