Abstract

Peripheral facial paralysis results from an abnormality of the VII cranial nerve, facial nerve, from its nucleus in the pons to its cranial exit through the stylomastoid foramen. There are several etiologies, the most common being idiopathic, also known as Bell's palsy. The electrophysiological parameters of nerve conduction studies are extremely relevant for the prognosis in the acute phase, after 11 days of its installation. Electromyographic parameters (needle examination) are also relevant for monitoring reinnervation after the fourth week in the most severe cases. The study will analyze retrospectively the electrophysiological parameters (nerve conduction and electromyography) of 486 patients with peripheral facial palsy in a 28-year period from the electroneuromyography database. The parameters age, gender, etiology and associated disorders will also be analyzed. (AU)
