Abstract The proposal aims to understand how Brazilian political parties survive in contemporary representative government. This project proposes to investigate comparatively the trajectories of PT, PSDB, PMDB and PFL/DEM between 1998 and 2018 at the national (executive and legislative) and state (executive) levels by using the process-tracing technique in path dependence. The main hypothesis is that Brazilian political parties remain competitive over time by employing specialized, continuous and aligned strategies in representative disputes - organizational, electoral and government arenas. To test this hypothesis, a party survival model, drawn from the Brazilian literature, will be applied; this model observes the trajectories of party survival in three dimensions of analysis: the organizational trajectory (domain and articulation of the organization), the electoral trajectory (positions and electoral results) and the government trajectory (positions such as government and opposition and positions of power occupied).
