Abstract

This postdoctoral research project examines the trajectories and social networks of Brazilian intellectuals exiled in Chile between 1964 and 1973, studying the reconfigurations of the space of intellectuals and politics occurred once they resettled in Brazil. The investigation has five integrated goals: 1) Social characterization of the population and outlay of the structure of polarities of their social space. 2) Retrace the origin of social ties abroad in order to evaluate their effect in the shaping the network corresponding to the re-democratization period. 3) Verify if individuals with similar social characteristics were more likely to establish connections. 4) Investigate channels of migration and discuss the role played by international institutions in hosting and supporting the exiled. 5) Examine ideas, expertise and political repertoires acquired abroad and 6) Observe the mobilization of imported resources and the translations of theories and conceptions of development, politics and society during Brazilian re-opening to democracy. Therefore, interviews with Brazilian intellectuals that have been in Chile during the time will be conducted and documents and testimonials referring to the patterns of social, political and intellectual insertion will be collected. Data from oral and documental sources will be combined into a prosopographical database and a list of connections that shall be analyzed employing simultaneously two theoretical-methodological frameworks: network analysis and multiple correspondences analysis, in order to outlay the interactions between social properties, position taking and bonds connecting agents and institutions.
