Abstract

This project proposes a research strategy to understand the forms of public presentation assumed by the "evangélicos" in the last decades and how it affected the transformations that marked the construction of the public sphere in Brazil since the Constitution of 1988, when debates on diversity, participation and citizenship where on the spotlight. I propose to take a step forward and avoid the focus on the internal heterogeneity of evangelicals, prioritized by many researchers, but that limits the possibilities of understanding situations in which a common imaginary of "evangélicos" becomes operative. Through the concept of "scape", formulated by Arjun Appadurai, I intend to work with the hypothesis that the public actions of these religious agents - in the media, street demonstrations, parliamentary activities, etc. -, by allowing the circulation of repertoires of "evangélicos", produce scapes, marked by the logic of "spiritual battle." I plan to analyze the editions of São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro of the "Marcha for Jesus", an event that performatically expresses the spiritual battle in the streets, to analyze constituent elements of these scapes. From the ethnographic analysis of these events, the research will seek to answer questions such as: What repertoires circulate in these landscapes and how? Who mobilizes them? What forms and performances characterize it? What is the impact of the concept of spiritual warfare, which does not distinguish the spheres of politics and religion, in the more general configurations of the Brazilian public sphere, since it operates precisely according to this separation, but also under the paradigm of diversity?
