Abstract

Saturated fatty acid excessive consumption increases the inflammatory response in the central nervous system. Obese patients undergoing magnetic resonance imaging showed decreased gray matter, distinct brain activation patterns and reduced cortical metabolism of appetite and cognitive areas. Bariatric surgery is considered an important strategy for the treatment of morbid obesity. Recent data demonstrates a partial improvement of brain metabolism after surgical intervention. Exercise training appears as an important tool to maintain the brain metabolism and structure of obese patients undergoing bariatric surgery. Until the present moment, there are no randomized, controlled clinical trials that attest to the benefits of exercise training on the brain metabolism and structure of these patients. This randomized, controlled and clinical trial aims to elucidate the effects of exercise training on brain metabolism and structure of obese patients undergoing bariatric surgery. In the baseline (PRE), after bariatric surgery (POS) and six months after exercise training (POS-6), patients will be submitted to magnetic resonance imaging technique in a 3Tesla machine to evaluate several brain parameters. In addition, the patients will be submitted to assessment of cognitive function, physical capacity, body composition and blood collection to evaluate the clinical parameters of insulin sensitivity and inflammatory markers.
