Abstract There are conclusive evidences of selenium (Se) deficiency in Brazilian soils, which can reflect on Se deficiency in plants, animals and humans. Thus, studies to increase the Se rate in edible parts of modern cultivars are required, because the yield increases has not been accompanied by an equal increase of micronutrient rate in the grains. This study aimed to evaluate the influence of Se on yield and nutritional quality of cowpea grains. In order to establish optimal levels of Se application in Brazilian conditions. The experiments 1 and 2 were performed at São Paulo State University in which the leaves and grains were collected to evaluation of nutrients and phytate content. Experiment 1: In greenhouse, an experiment was performed to characterize the genotypic variation on Se an Zn uptake and accumulation in grains. In this study, 29 genotypes of cowpea plants were cultivated in absence of nutrients, in presence of Se 0.3 mg kg-1), and in presence of Zn (0.3 mg kg-1). Experiment 2: In a field experiment, the efficiency of agronomic biofortification was evaluated by the application of two sources of Se (selenate and selenite) and 7 levels of Se (0; 2.5; 5.0; 7.5; 10.0; 20.0; and 40.0 g ha-1) applied via soil. Experiment 3: In a field experiment, the Se and S interaction was evaluated by the application of four rates of selenate (0; 10; 25 and 50 g Se. ha-1) and four rates of ammonium sulfate (0, 15, 30 and 60 kg S. ha-1). At the end of experiment, the samples of cowpea plants were collected and processed for nutrient concentration (experiments 1, 2 and 3), and phytate (IP5 and IP6) analysis. These analyses will be performed at The University of Nottingham under supervision of Prof. Martin Broadley. These activities were already approved as stated in the "schedule of activities" in the project "Characterization of genotypic variation and agronomic biofortification of cowpea plants with selenium to improve nutritional quality and low phytate content in grains" Process Number FAPESP (2016/19773-8). The data comingfrom this project will be an excellent tool to the understanding of the cowpea genetic diversity and for futures programs of genetic breeding aiming to reduce the accumulation of phytate in cowpea grains. | |
