Abstract

Anuran fossils are sparsely recovered in the fossil record; the low number and ossification of bones mainly explain this pattern, turning fossilization difficult. The clade Ceratophryidae runs this rule out by presenting at least 16 records ranging through Miocene to Holocene. The frogs in this clade are large and present hyper-ossification resulting from peramorphic developmental heterochrony. We have in hands two skulls and bones fragments belonging to a Ceratophrys collected at the Versalles Cave, near the Parque Estadual Turístico do Alto Ribeira (PETAR), Apiaí municipality, south of the State of São Paulo. The cave present Late Pleistocenic- Early Holocenic sediments. The Espeleo-group de Rio Claro have explored the site and found several fossils of Mammals (Cervidae, Xenarthra), Mollusks (Gastropoda) and the fossils of Anura object of this work. Our objectives are: (1) describe the morphology of Anuran specimens collected at the Versalles Cave; (2) position phylogenetically the specimens studied; (3) present a Paleoenvironmental hypotheses for the Ceratophryidae clade; (4) discuss the influence of this fossil in Paleobiogeographical hypothesis presented in previous works.
