Anaplasma marginale is an intra-erythrocytic bacterium that can be transmitted via placenta, biologically by ticks and mechanically by blood-sucking insects or fomites contaminated with blood. Infection with this agent results in additional costs for cattle rearing for the milk and meat industries, characterized by severe anemia that causes decreased weight gain and milk production, and frequently death. In Brazil, its prevalence ranges from 12.3% to 100%, and this pathogen can establish persistent infection in cattle. The present study aimed to investigate the occurrence of Anaplasma marginale in naturally infected beef herds in the Pantanal of Mato Grosso do Sul, using serological and molecular techniques. Serum and blood samples will be submitted to Indirect Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay [iELISA]) and Real-time Quantitative PCR [qPCR]), respectively. The data obtained here will contribute to the knowledge of the occurrence of Anaplasma marginale in Pantanal. In addition, considering that the Pantanal Sul Matogrossense is responsible for beef cattle production, the impacts on cattle breeding in this region are of great economic importance for the country.
