Impact of intermittent hemodialysis on the reduction of systemic inflammation in dogs in chronic kidney disease by C-reactive protein analysis

Abstract

Chronic kidney disease is a common pathology. It is a third cause of death among dogs and cats of old age. Hemodialysis is indicated as supportive therapy in chronic kidney disease. Chronic inflammation caused by systemic changes in chronic kidney disease plays an important role in the morbidity and mortality of these animals, especially in animals submitted to renal replacement therapy such as intermittent hemodialysis. The change in serum concentrations of acute phase proteins is related to the level of severity of the inflammatory process. C-reactive protein is an acute phase protein regulating the inflammatory response and it can be used as a marker of this response in dogs. This research aims to evaluate the use of intermittent hemodialysis in reducing systemic inflammation by serum concentration of C-reactive protein in dogs with chronic kidney disease IV. Twenty-one dogs with chronic kidney disease IV, divided into three groups (G1 healthy, G2 - clinical treatment, and G3 - clinical treatment + intermittent hemodialysis) will be selected. Blood samples will be collected before the start of each hemodialysis session or clinical treatment. Material will be collected for hemogram and serum levels of urea, creatinine, albumin, electrolytes (potassium, sodium, calcium and phosphorus) and C-reactive protein. (AU)
