Abstract

In this research we will examine some images attributed to Emperor Gratian (359-383). We are interested in understanding what were the official images accepted and proclaimed by Gratian to legitimize the practice of his power. We also analyzed what actions and values these images highlight when they delineated Gratian as secular leader of the Romans. We suggest that this Gratian's image was nourished by speeches of varied nature and it exalted the superiority and the centrality of his power in the context of the challenges of the imperium made by possible usurpers and by those people who Gratian shared this power, Valentinian II and Theodosius. To develop this research, we selected testimonies written by two important public men of the fourth century A.D.: Quintus Aurelius Symmachus Eusebius, a roman senator, of whom we will analyze Laudatio in Gratianum Augustum, Pro Trygetio and Pro patre; and Ambrose, bishop pf Milan, of who we choose to examine the treaties De fide and De Spiritu Sancto. We add to this new historiographical challenge the analysis of thirty-two coins of Gratian, under the custody of the National History Museum of Rio de Janeiro. Through the study of different discursive elaborations, we will try to reinterpret who was one of the imperium partner of Theodosius: Gratian. (AU)
