Abstract

Some serovars of Salmonella spp. infect both humans and birds. Historically, poultry products are sources of infection of S. Enteritidis and S. Typhimurium (STM) in humans. When importing chicken meat, the European Union (EU) notifies more than 250 samples contaminated with Salmonella spp. in 2017. Currently, Salmonella Heidelberg (SH) has been isolated from lots of broilers. Some strains of SH have multidrug resistance patterns to antibiotics and, therefore, are a concern for public health and the poultry industry. Some strains of SH have multidrug resistance patterns to antibiotics and, therefore, are a concern for public health and the poultry industry. Thus, the application of biosafety measures together with a poor epidemiological investigation are primordial tools in the control of these pathogens. For this, different methodologies can be used for epidemiological purposes, among them: PFGE, which is based on the enzymatic restriction of the genome; and the Preserved Repeated Sequences (REP, ERIC and BOX) using PCR primers that enable the amplification of single sequences. These methods allow to compare and identify variations in the genetic content of homologous bacterial strains. Considering this assumption, the present research project aims to characterize the genetic and antimicrobial resistance profiles of SH isolates. (AU)
