Abstract

Our overall aim is to study aspects of the historical constitution of the conjunctional periphrasis without the theoretical frame of grammaticalization (Traugott; Dasher, 2002; Heine; Kuteva, 2007; Bybee, 2015), considering that, in contemporary Brazilian Portuguese, this periphrasis expresses several meanings, including concession. Assuming that without results from a very productive - yet not strictly analogic - process of conjunction creation in Romanic languages, we intend to answer the following questions: 1) Which properties of the preposition without have supported the progressive incorporation of the proposition que followed by reanalysis? 2) When and in which contexts, in the history of Portuguese, the concessive meaning of without emerges? Therefore, we shall develop our research from a diachronic perspective, based on texts from different genres which have been written over a time frame of seven centuries. (AU)
