Abstract

The need for orthopedic joint prostheses, such as hip and knee prostheses, has become more and more common, mainly due to the aging of the population. In this scenario, Ti alloys, especially those of the ² type, have attracted greater attention among the metallic materials used in prostheses since they offer the best combination of mechanical properties, corrosion resistance and biological responses. However, the low wear resistance of metallic materials, in general, remains a problem to be solved, as the degradation of the implant can be accelerated due to the friction that occurs in a corrosive environment. In order to solve this problem, the present work aims to improve the tribological behavior of ² Ti-Nb alloys by adding ceramic precipitates as reinforcement. Therefore, the objective is to synthesize the reinforcing phase during the composite fabrication, named as in-situ process condition, which usually allows for obtaining a strong matrix/reinforcement interfacial bonding. Different processing routes will be applied to better develop the composites to study the chemical reactions that may occur during the process and then analyze the effects promoted by the in-situ reinforcement. In addition, the present work aims to investigate the influence of different combinations of starting materials prepared for the production of the in-situ composites to find the composite with the best combination of properties, in particular, with high tribocorrosion resistance.
