Abstract

The Jogo do Bicho is an activity that emerged in Brazil at the end of the 19th century and is one of the most remarkable elements of Brazilian popular culture. Then, even if classified as an illegal activity since 1941 by Decree-Law no. 3,688, the Jogo do Bicho has won popularity in a Brazilian society, mainly by the symbolism and near the type of lottery. The present work intends the use of the territory by the organizations of Jogo do Bicho, aiming to identify five of its main elements: 1. their forms of organization; 2. the evolution of techniques; 3. the legal norms that regulate it (especially the legal prohibition since 1941); 4. degree of capitalization (or "financialization"); and 5. their localization strategies in urban space. In order to reach a goal, the theory of the two circuits of the urban economy, which allows a clear interpretation of the elements of prominence, under a geographical bias, proved to be quite operational. As an empirical cut of the research, we defined an analysis of two organizations of the type that operates in the city of Arapiraca (AL): A Casa da Fortuna and Portas da sorte. From the analysis, two concrete cases, we also see identified in operation in other cities os the state of Alagoas. (AU)
