Abstract

Nowadays the society demands more and more technological resources to provide the maintenance of the modern lifestyle. In this context, it is important to emphasize the need of increase food production as a result of population growth. The scientific community has intensified studies on new materials in order to use their properties on composites manufacture that are efficient for programmed release (ferti-release materials). These materials are attractive since they release the essential nutrients for the plants in a prolonged way and are better absorbed. Additionally, programmed release materials decrease the environmental damage, increase the practicality during application, diminish the fertilizer consumption, and increase the productivity. This project aims the development of matrices still little explored by the scientific community for the production of fertilizer materials. The natural zeolite clinoptilolite has in its structure a high index of porosity, in this way, these cavities will be used to anchor macro and micronutrient. Sequentially, zeolites added with fertilizers will be incorporated into multi-layer films of carboxymethylcellulose and chitosan. The films will be used as a hydrophobic barrier promoting greater prolongation of nutrient release. The materials will be characterized thermally, structurally and morphologically, the kinetics of nutrient release will be analyzed by Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometry, Flame Spectrometry and Total Nitrogen Determination. Soil nutrient release tests will be performed with on-site monitoring using the Time Domain Reflectometry (TDR) technique. The perspective is to obtain an environmentally friendly material that accomplishes a programmed nutrient release compared to conventional fertilizers. (AU)
