Interactions between plants and insects are the most common type of plant-herbivore interactions and they shape community dynamics and ecosystem evolution. Specialist and generalist insects interact with plants in different ways and they might elicit differential responses in plant defenses. Recently, metabolomics analysis associated with chemical ecology are gaining importance, highlighting the potential of ecometabolomics to study plant-herbivore interactions. The main objective of this study is to evaluate ecochemical interactions between plants belonging to Asteraceae family and insect herbivores, using a specialist on the plants of the tribe Heliantheae and a generalist insect herbivores (Chlosyne lacinia and Spodoptera frugiperda, respectively). Metabolic fingerprinting will be obtained by LC-MS and GC-MS, followed by multivariate statistical analysis. Data mining will be performed using supervised and unsupervised statistical analysis and discriminant metabolites will be identified by dereplication. Concurrently, larval development and plant volatile emissions will be evaluated, in field, during the herbivory. Thus, we intend to study herbivore-induced responses and ecochemical interactions between plants and insects using different analytical techniques and to contribute to a better understanding of these interactions.
