Abstract

The control of the raw materials used in additive manufacturing (AM) of metals is crucial. Parts produced by AM are built layer by layer using powder as raw material. The size distribution, morphology, chemical composition and fabrication process may significantly impact parts produced by AM. This project aims to characterize commercial powder of 316L steel, which will be used in the AM processes of Direct Energy Deposition and Powder Bed Fusion during the "The study, development and application of a hybrid process: Additive Manufacturing (AM) plus High Speed Machining/Grinding (HSM/G)" thematic project. The powder will have its particle size distribution evaluated and it will be characterized by differential scanning calorimetry, X-ray diffraction, optical microscopy, scanning and transmission electron microscopy and chemical analyses.
