Abstract

Short bowel syndrome is a condition that results from a large resection of small bowel loops or insufficient functioning of the bowel. After large intestinal resections, several histophysiological adjustments occur in the remaining loops, aiming at the recovery of the absorptive capacity. Among these adjustments, dilatation and elongation of the remaining loops, enlargement of intestinal villi and crypts, and increase in enterocyte proliferation are observed. There are several experimental models of short intestine, with extensive intestinal resection in the rat being one of the most used in the literature. However, there is no research comparing jejunum and ileum regarding their adaptation. Thus, the aim of this study is to compare the histophysiological adaptation of the jejunum and ileum, after resection of its complement in young rats. Twenty-four young Wistar rats newly weaned (21 days) divided into groups: Jejuno (young rats submitted to ileum isolated and euthanized 21 days after the intervention), Íleo (young rats submitted to an isolated enterectomy of jejunum and euthanized 21 days after the intervention) and controls (young) with the same number of animals from the other groups. The daily weighing of the animals, measurement of the length and diameter of the withdrawn loops of the remnants, as well as histomorphometric, immunohistochemical and molecular studies will be performed to compare the intestinal adaptive mechanisms in the both groups.
