Abstract

Cataract is among the most common eye diseases in dogs. Phacoemulsification is the method that best suits its therapy and the favorite among ophthalmologists. The cellularity of the endothelium is an important factor for the success of the surgery. Endothelial lesions may produce permanent corneal decompensation, changing its transparency. They result, among other conditions, of the high-energy vibrations and free radicals generated, as well as inflammatory processes inherent to the surgery and the postoperative period. The decompensation manifests itself when the cell density decreases to critical values, compromising the function of the endothelial pump and enabling the entrance of aqueous humor into the corneal stroma. Procedures of transplantation have been proposed to replace the injured corneal endothelium, but often the cornea banks fail to meet the demands, which justify the search for alternative strategies of endothelial protection during phacoemulsification. Recent alternative lies with the use of Rho kinase (ROCK) inhibitor, Y-27632, which acts promoting stimuli and functional preservation of endothelial cells. The aim of this study is to evaluate the effectivity of intracameral ROCK inhibitor (Y-27632) in the endothelial protection in dogs undergoing phacoemulsification. After phacoemulsification and cataract aspiration, the dogs will be evaluated by clinical examination, non-contact specular microscopy and laser flare cell meter. (AU)
