Abstract

To improve performance of animals after birth, consideration should be given to maternal nutrition throughout pregnancy, and this strategy of improvement involves aspects related to what is called "fetal programming". Maternal malnutrition during the gestational period can lead to problems in myogenesis and consequently a low number of muscle fibers, thus reducing the performance of lambs in confinement. Other changes that occur are in the blood parameters, especially in the glucose and insulin content. In order to evaluate the consequences of fetal programming on blood parameters of 60-day-old lambs, samples of blood will be collected from sheep that received 5 different diets, below the requirement according to NRC (2007), within the requirement (maintenance) and super fed, these are divided into three different treatments, starch, chromium and protected fat. In the second experimental period a completely randomized design of the lambs in the confinement will be used to observe if the diet of the mother during pregnancy influences the types and amount of muscle fibers as well as the performance of these animals. The hypothesis is that lambs born to ewes that received diets below the recommendations of the NRC (2007) or sheep that were super nourished have a lower number of muscle fibers and that some blood parameters such as insulin, glucose and leptin are altered, growth of the various tissues in the carcass and muscle, with negative impact on the final quality of the meat.
