Abstract

Through the formal analysis and study of M. I. Lermontovs (1814-1841) lyrical poetry, taken in the broader context of his works and his historical reality, the present project aims at elucidating the ethical ideal of melancholy in his poetical works. Although the former can be seen more clearly in his poems of political or philosophical nature, and the later, in those about love or existential subjects, one can nevertheless identify a deep relation between them in what becomes a melancholic ideal of society and the world, present in some of his most famous poems, such as Death of the Poet, Borodino, Thought, and others. To understand the connection between this ideal and Lermontovs literary and historical context, we intend to articulate the poems analysis with the historical concept of Romanticism, dully understood in the light of Russias singularities in Lermontovs epoch.
